Poppy and her FOO (Farm of Origin) mate Peony are the newest members of our flock. It is a happy occasion when new lambs come to the Farm, although our adult sheep object seriously to the disruption of their routine. Lambs are the whole package: funny, loving, adorable, joyful. Poppy must have been blessed with extra doses of cheerfulness and equanimity. Nothing seems to bother her. When they were really little Peony, who is over a month younger, would continually and riotously jump onto Poppy. Poppy, however, endured it all with good grace, remaining remarkably unfazed – we thought she deserved an award for her patience. Poppy loves to climb. If there is an object to clamber onto – a bale of hay or a stack of them, a rock, a bucket – Poppy will be enjoying the view from its summit.
Poppy has what is termed a “beaver” coat, which doesn’t resemble a beaver at all. It simply means that she is “double coated” with a long outer coat and an ultra soft layer underneath. Not only does it keep her exceptionally warm, it’s also lush and beautiful. Her coloring is a unique tortoise shell combination of rich charcoal, browns and blacks, while her fuzzy little ears look as though they were dipped in cream with light colored tips and spattered dots.
