There should be a photo of Hazel next to the word “shy” in the dictionary. When she first came to the Farm she would flee in abject fear and panic if we even glanced in her direction. In spite of having lived with us for a number of years, she remains our only sheep who will not accept our petting. She is such a sweet girl – we never give up the hope that one day she will allow us to give her the loving attention she deserves. We are willing to be as patient as necessary and move at her pace. She doesn’t run when we look at her or talk to her now. Lately she has allowed me to enter the pen while she is standing nearby without retreating – at least not immediately – and then she just strolls off instead of running! She loves grain so will nibble very cautiously if offered a handful from someone she knows.
Hazel has a broad, gentle face and a lovely soft coat of the color we call Shetland cream, and she has a hint of ginger on her face and crown. Our vet tech said that she’s a butterball but we think she’s just pleasantly plump.
